　　The Irish music mogul stormed out of the auditions after Cole and Cowell refused to put through a singer that he had given a ’100 per cent yes’ to.

　　Hempfield grad to vie for Miss Virginia crown

　　

　　Lancaster county native Heather Harley will compete in the Miss Virginia pageant on Thursday.

　　

　　A first-time pageant contestant, Heather Harley borrowed two dresses, bought a pair of $5 earrings and did her own hair and makeup.

　　Now she has a title, a $4,000 scholarship ― and a shot at becoming Miss Virginia.

　　At Virginia’s Miss Lynchburg competition in May, the 2007 Hempfield High School graduate was announced the winner of the talent portion for her performance of Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You.”

　　She said at that moment she thought she had done pretty well in her first pageant.

　　Then, they called her name for the Miss Lynchburg crown.

　　”It took a while to click until she came over and put the crown on my head,” Harley, a senior at Liberty University, said. “I just remember looking at my family and being like, ‘What?’ “

　　Harley said she always loved being on the stage, wearing crowns and singing, and she was a finalist in the Lancaster Headliners competition.

　　Now she will continue from the local competition to the state pageant for Miss Virginia on Thursday through Saturday, where she will compete against 29 other women to represent Virginia in the Miss America pageant.

　　Harley said she decided to enter the contest a few months ago when she saw that Liberty was offering the scholarship for winning the Miss Lynchburg title.

　　But she first began to think seriously about competing in a pageant after a Miss U.S.A. contestant came to Liberty to speak.

　　Still, Miss U.S.A. and Miss America are different, Harley said, because Miss America gives women a chance to win scholarships and stand up for a platform.

　　”It’s all about how you use it,” she said.

　　In addition to raising money for Children’s Miracle Network ― a requirement of all contestants ― Harley’s platform includes children’s safety online and child sex trafficking. She is raising money for the organization Love 146, which, according to its website, seeks to abolish child sex slavery and exploitation.

　　For the Miss Virginia competition, Harley, who is engaged to fellow Hempfield graduate Anthony Daly, has a five-person team accompanying her from Lynchburg. But she said she doesn’t want to spend thousands of dollars to prepare.

　　”I wouldn’t even spend that on my wedding dress,” she said. “I think I’m still going to try and incorporate the $5 earrings, but we’ll see.”

　　The net-a-porter group has announced the launch of a dedicated menswear site – the first global shopping destination of its kind. The site, to be called Mr Porter, will launch for the spring/summer 2011 season, with an edited line-up which includes global designer labels and niche brands, as well as editorial and style advice.

　　The more than 60 top menswear brands to be featured include Burberry, Ralph Lauren, Lanvin, YSL, Gucci, Margiela, Balmain, Dunhill, Margaret Howell, Rick Owens, John Lobb and MR by the designer, Roland Mouret.

　　The menswear launch comes ten years to the day after net-a-porter was founded by the former journalist, Natalie Massenet. Earlier this year, she sold her remaining stake in the luxury online shopping destination to the Richemont Group for ￡50million.

　　If I wanted to buy a fresh pineapple, some knockoff Gucci sunglasses and a half pound of alligator meat, I’d head straight to Soulard Farmers Market.

　　The farmers-market-meets-swap-meet aspect of the place is part of its charm.

　　But what if I just wanted some fresh vegetables? And I wanted to stay local, within 5 miles of the Journals office in Collinsville?

　　I’d go to Norma’s Produce and Greenhouses.

　　Roadside fruit and vegetable stands come in many forms. I’ve purchased vegetables from vendors operating out of the back of a truck, vendors seasonally-installed on a rented asphalt lot and vendors standing on the side of the road with a hand-painted sign.

　　Norma’s is a higher-profile operation.

　　Open roughly from April to Labor Day and perched along Illinois Route 157 in Glen Carbon, Norma’s could be classified as a big stand or a tiny market.

　　I browsed the goods on display last week. Fresh strawberries, pineapples, mangoes, blueberries and peaches all looked inviting. Turnips, bicolored corn, bell peppers, onions looked equally tasty.

　　I plucked a couple of green bell peppers from a basket. Two for 79 cents.

　　I examined their dimensions. They weren’t huge and perfectly shaped – a good thing. I don’t particularly trust the shiny, mutant-sized vegetables you sometimes see at large grocers.

　　The goods here, some of which come from local farmers, looked more like something you could grow at home, if you had time and loads of skill.

　　I picked up a pineapple ($2.50), two of the aforementioned peppers (79 cents), three ears of corn (99 cents) and a jar of Mexican hot sauce ($3.99) from the jar goods shelf.

　　(I had to tap a previously unknown reservoir of will power to resist buying a jar of bacon salad dressing from that same shelf.)

　　In the brief time I was there, several other cars pulled into the gravel lot.

　　When I was checking out, I asked the clerk if this was this was busiest part of the season.

　　Not even close.

　　”When we get sweet corn it will be hectic,” he replied. “But when homegrown tomatoes come in it will be outrageous.”

　　Bashing his dog in the head with a flashlight, which led to the animal losing an eye, has landed a Calgary man nine months of house arrest.

　　Provincial court Judge Bruce Fraser on Tuesday said Donald James Ainsworth poses no danger to the public, so a conditional sentence was warranted.

　　Fraser said barring Ainsworth from being around pets for five years would alleviate any concern he poses a risk.

　　He said the term behind bars sought by Crown prosecutor Gord Haight wasn’t necessary, noting Ainsworth had no prior criminal history.

　　“The court … must be satisfied that he would not be a danger to the community,” the judge said in citing one of the pre-conditions for considering a conditional sentence order.

　　“The offender has no criminal record, is 46 years of age, and if prohibited from having the custody or control of an animal … he could not be said to be a risk to the community.”

　　Ainsworth earlier pleaded guilty to wilfully permitting his dog to be caused unnecessary pain or suffering in connection with a March 14, 2009, incident.

　　Ainsworth became angry at his miniature Doberman pinscher, Gucci, when she urinated in his truck.

　　He grabbed Gucci by the neck and shook her before striking her on the head with a flashlight.

　　The animal ran under some shelving and Ainsworth was unable to get the animal out.

　　He went to bed, awakening the next morning to find his injured pet beside him.

　　Ainsworth eventually had a friend take the dog to the humane society, where a vet determined its injured eye would have to be removed.

　　Fraser agreed with defence lawyer Andrea Serink a jail term in the three- to five-month range sought by Haight wasn’t needed.

　　Outside court, animal activist Heather Anderson said Ainsworth’s five-year ban from having pets was a positive step.

　　“I wish it was a lifetime ban, but five years is better than two years,” she said.

　　Shopping mall giant Westfield has not ruled out launching a virtual shopping centre in New Zealand after announcing plans to do so across the ditch.

　　Westfield has 12 malls in New Zealand which house some of the country’s biggest retail brands, including The Warehouse, Michael Hill Jeweller and clothing store Glassons.

　　Westfield, the world’s No1 listed retail group, is in final negotiations with Australian retail tenants, who will sell through the site, which will be a one-stop shop for customers wanting to buy online from Westfield retailers.

　　Westfield New Zealand shopping centre general manager Lynda Trainer says the virtual mall is being developed for Australia, and plans do not include New Zealand.

　　It is understood the virtual mall will focus on fashion retailing and split products into categories including electronics and books, the Sydney Morning Herald reported. Retailers that already have an established online presence could integrate their online shopping trolley with Westfield’s.

　　It is uncertain whether retailers will pay rent on the site or a fraction of their sales.

　　Westfield first flirted with online shopping in the late 1990s, but executive chairman Frank Lowy scrapped its plans out of fear fewer customers would visit its bricks-and-mortar malls. Consumers are increasingly opting to shop online and retailers have responded.

　　The Warehouse, YahooXtra, Noel Leeming, Dick Smith and Whitcoulls all offer online shopping sites, and a raft of daily deals websites has sprung up offering discounted goods for a limited time. About 1.4 million New Zealanders shop online, researcher Nielsen says.
